Is it safe to drink tap water in the Cayman Islands?
This is a common question among tourists and locals alike, with varying opinions and justifications. According to the 2010 census, 88% of Cayman households have potable water available through their water mains, but 79% of households consume bottled water. This shows that most island residents do not have confidence in the quality of their tap water, so perhaps tourists shouldn’t either!
For the most part, the tap water in Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac is safe to drink, in that you will not get parasites or nasty diseases from the water because the water has come from underground, naturally filtered sources, and has been desalinated.
However, as with many municipal water systems, chemicals such as chlorine are added to disinfect the water. These chemicals can seriously affect the taste and quality of the drinking water, which is very noticeable when you compare with bottled water.
So do I have to buy bottled water? Cayman is already super expensive! Well…it is a better option than drinking tap water, but we don’t actively recommend it.
